چکیده

We study the problem of atomic scale fracture using the recently developed quasicontinuum method in which there is a systematic thinning of the atomic-level degrees of freedom in regions where they are not needed. Fracture is considered in two distinct settings. First, a study is made of cracks in single crystals, and second, we consider a crack advancing towards a grain boundary (GB) in its path. In the investigation of single crystal fracture, we evaluate the competition between simple cleavage and crack-tip dislocation emission. In addition, we examine the ability of analytic models to correctly predict fracture behaviour, and find that the existing analytical treatments are too restrictive in their treatment of nonlinearity near the crack tip. In the study of GB–crack interactions, we have found a number of interesting deformation mechanisms which attend the advance of the crack. These include the migration of the GB, the emission of dislocations from the GB, and deflection of the crack front along the GB itself. In each case, these mechanisms are rationalized on the basis of continuum mechanics

9 A comparative study of fracture in Al : quantum mechanical vs . empirical atomistic description

A comparative study of fracture in Al is carried out by using quantum mechanical and empirical atomistic description of atomic interaction at crack tip. The former is accomplished with the density functional theory (DFT) based Quasicontinuum method (QCDFT) and the latter with the original Quasicontinuum method (EAM-QC). Aside from quantitative differences, the two descriptions also yield qualit...

Multiscale Simulation of Indentation, Retraction and Fracture Processes of Nanocontact

The process of nanocontact including indentation and retraction between a large Ni tip and a Cu substrate is investigated using quasicontinuum (QC) method. The multiscale model reveals that significant plastic deformation occurs during the process of nanocontact between Ni tip and Cu substrate. Plastic deformation is observed in an area as large as 20 nm wide and 10 nm thick beneath Ni tip duri...

Sharp Stability Estimates for the Accurate Prediction of Instabilities by the Quasicontinuum Method

We propose that sharp stability estimates are essential for evaluating the predictive capability of atomistic-to-continuum coupling methods up to the limit load for atomistic instabilities such as fracture, dislocation movement, or crack tip propagation. Using rigorous analysis, asymptotic methods, and numerical experiments, we obtain such sharp stability estimates for the basic conservative qu...

A Nanoscale Meshfree Particle Method with the Implementation of the Quasicontinuum Method

Since meshfree particle methods have advantages on simulating the problems involving extremely large deformations, fractures etc., they become attractive options to be used in the hierarchical multiscale modeling to approximate a large number of atoms. We propose a nanoscale meshfree particle method with the implementation of the quasicontinuum technique in this paper. The intrinsic properties ...

Sharp Stability Estimates for the Force-Based Quasicontinuum Approximation of Homogeneous Tensile Deformation

The accuracy of atomistic-to-continuum hybrid methods can be guaranteed only for deformations where the lattice configuration is stable for both the atomistic energy and the hybrid energy. For this reason, a sharp stability analysis of atomistic-to-continuum coupling methods is essential for evaluating their capabilities for predicting the formation of lattice defects. We formulate a simple one...
